Stephen Welch

When life throws challenges at us, it’s often our friends we turn to. In Stephen Welch’s case, when he was made redundant from his job as a local government office in 1998 it was a friend who directed him to Birchwood Investment Management, which led to a relationship that is still going strong.

Stephen, from London, was keen to seek some expert advice on the best way to manage the lump sum and pension he received as part of his redundancy package.

He explains: “A friend of mine, whom I have known forever, had gone through a similar experience at Heinz, where the company had called in Birchwood to provide financial advice. He thought they provided good quality information.”

Stephen arranged a meeting at Birchwood’s offices. He says: “They asked me my requirements – what I wanted from my portfolio – and made suggestions and recommendations which they thought would be in keeping with that.”

Now he keeps in touch with the performance of his portfolio through the client area of Birchwood’s website and quarterly statements while the company’s regular newsletters and information on recommended products are also helpful.

Stephen finds the Birchwood team efficient in making changes relating to his investments, as in September 2008, when he stopped taking an income from his portfolio. Summing up, he describes Birchwood as “informative and professional” and has been happy to recommend the firm himself to other friends.
